Full Description

Site of a 1.5m mound known since 1963 when a stamped sherd of 'middle Saxon' pottery was found (PRN 40032). Mr White of the City and County Museum visited the site in 1977, and confirmed the site only produced pottery dating to the 13th century and later. The mound also contained building stone, tile and a fragment of louvre. The pottery was mainly local including Toynton, Lincoln, Bourne, Bolingbroke and Kirkstead wares, also a number of 'curfew' sherds. The sherd formerly identified as Saxon might have been one of these. A net sinker was also found. Similar site and finds at Short Ferry, Fiskerton, were identified as a fishery in documentary sources. The mound is thought to have been to keep fishery buildings out of water in flooded area, prior to the creation of the 19th century river banking. The finds are in City and County Museum. {1}{2} A fishery known as 'Chakesgard' was rented for 12d per annum from Tupholme Abbey by nuns of Stixwould. Was it this site? {3}
