Full Description

PRN 35077 DURING AN EVALUATION ON LAND AT THE UFFINGTON ESTATE IN ADVANCE OF THE GOLF COURSE MANY FLINT TOOLS WERE RECOVERED DURING FIELDWALKING. THERE WERE TWO CONCENTRATIONS. IN THE WESTERN CONCENTRATION THE MODEST PROPORTION OF BLADE- LIKE MATERIAL SUGGESTS A LATE NEOLITHIC/BRONZE AGE DATE, ALTHOUGH MESOLITHIC FLINTS WERE PRESENT. THE OTHER CONCENTRATION IS LOCATED 600 M TO THE SOUTH EAST, AND IS MORE MESOLITHIC IN CHARACTER. DURING TRIAL TRENCHING SOUTH OF THE WELLAND CANAL SPREADS OF CHARCOAL AND SEVERAL LARGE PATCHES OF FIRE-REDDENED CLAY WERE RECORDED, WHICH WERE INTERPRETED AS MESOLITHIC HEARTHS. MICROLITHS WERE ALSO FOUND IN THIS AREA. {1}{2}
