Full Description

DURING AN EVALUATION ON LAND BETWEEN SPALDING ROAD AND EASTGATE EVIDENCE FOR POTTERY PRODUCTION ON THE SITE FOLLOWING A PHASE OF FLOODING WAS FOUND. THIS EVIDENCE INCLUDED SIXTEENTH CENTURY POTTERY AND AN AREA USED AS A WORKING FLOOR FOR THE CLAY PREPARATION. A CLAY PREPARATION PIT AND A TIMBER POST WERE ESTABLISHED ON THE WORKING SURFACE. THE POST SUGGESTS A STRUCTURE OF SOME KIND. THERE WAS ALSO EVIDENCE OF DUMPING OF ASH AND CHARCOAL PROBABLY FROM THE CLEANING OUT OF NEARBY POTTERY KILNS. THESE ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPOSITS OF INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY WERE SEALED BY SOIL CONTAINING POTTERY OF SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DATE. THIS CORRELATES WITH DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE FOR THE DEMISE OF THE BOURNE POTTERIES OF SOMETIME IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY FOLLOWING A MAJOR FIRE IN THE AREA. {1}{2} ON LAND TO THE EAST OF HERE AN EVALUATION IDENTIFIED FURTHER WASTERS AND FIFTEENTH TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY POTTERY, ALSO A SMALL PIT WITH FIFTEENTH CENTURY BOURNE WARE POTTERY WITHIN IT AT TF 1050 1992. {3}{4} A watching brief was carried out on the former Spalding Road industrial estate. In the south of the area dumps of pottery wasters were identified. Two dumps were revealed which dated to the early 13th to early 14th century, and from the mid 15th to the mid 17th century. A further series of waster dumps was also identified which appears to date from the late 12th to the mid 13th century. {5}{6}
