PRN 35036
Cropmarks of a Roman road and roadside settlement are visible on aerial photographs, south of the River Witham. The straight section of road, 390m in length, trends east to west and is flanked by rectilinear ditched enclosures. The conjectured course of the Roman road eastward is to the Ancaster Gap, where a Roman fort and settlement is sited. This route can be partially traced in an existing straight track, from Long Bennington to Marston, named Stonepit Lane. The conjectured route westward is to the Fosse Way. {1}
During the assessment of the water pipeline route, the field containing the Romano-British remains was walked. Pottery was noted which included grey ware, colour-coated ware and Dalesware pottery. {4}
During a watching brief, a scatter of Romano-British pottery was recovered from the surface of the field at about SK 8465 4407. An east to west aligned ditch also contained pottery dating to this period. It has been suggested that this ditch may have remained as an extant earthwork until levelling occurred in the medieval period.{5}{6}
