IT IS REPORTED THAT IN THE 1930's STONE FOOTINGS WERE SEEN BY CHILDREN SWIMMING IN THE OLD VILLAGE POND AT THE JUNCTION OF TOWNGATE EAST AND GODSEY'S LANE. POSSIBLY AN OLD SHEEP DIP, ALTHOUGH IT IS ON THE LINE OF THE ROMAN CAR DYKE. {1}
