Full Description

35026 The settlement of Wilsthorpe is first documented in the Domesday Book. Ivo Taillebois owned a manor there, and the minimum population at that time was 20. Sokeland belonging to this manor was located on Obthorpe and Helpringham. Another manor belonging to the Wilsthorpe manor was located in Burton Coggles and Bassingthorpe. {1} The place-name derives from an Old Norse personal name and 'thorp', meaning 'Vifill's secondary settlement (of Braceborough). {2} A substantial ditch, orientated south-west to north-east was exposed during a watching brief on water mains replacement. Its fill contained organic remains and sediments indicative of slow-moving water. Samples from the ditch were taken for environmental assessment and radiocarbon dating, the results of which suggest that the ditch is medieval, possibly a field boundary. {3}{4}
