Full Description

PRN 35505 During an evaluation on Eastgate the remains of a medieval building were identified dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth century. A number of features were seen representing several phases of occupation. A millstone was found with evidence of having been burnt as part of a hearth base. To the front of the plot a roadside ditch was found running parallel with the front of the building. it seems that the building went out of use in the 1500's. {1} During trial trenching at TF 1039 1990 a number of medieval features were revealed. The earliest features recorded were a 12th-14th century ditch and pit. It is thought that the ditch probably marks a boundary, perhaps to the rear of the properties that may have fronted onto Eastgate at an early stage of the town's development. The trial trenching also revealed what is thought to be a floor surface and hearth base, indicating a structure, probably of a domestic or workshop nature. A large assemblage of sherds from the 12th-14th century were recovered, approximately 200 sherds. This assemblage consists entirely of Bourne A and A/B wares with no imported types this suggests that the area was of a low status. {2}{3} An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at Potter's Close, Bourne (TF 1040 1993) in advance of a residential development. The evaluation identified three pits, two dated to the 13th to 14th century date along with a small amount of tile. Most of the pottery appears to be production waste related to the local pottery industry.{4}{5} During archaeological excavation on land off Eastgate (TF 1039 1990), the earliest remains dated to the 12th-13th century. These consisted mainly of drainage ditches alongside the adjacent road. During the 13th-15th century the site was occupied, probably domestically, although wasters indicate the production of pottery and roof tiles nearby. Also, three ovens were identified which may represent the flues of a multi-flue kiln, although no kiln floor survived. The site appears to have been mostly used for pottery production during the 15th-16th centuries (see PRN 35725). {6}{7}
