Full Description
PRN 34991
DURING A WATCHING BRIEF ON A PIPELINE UP TO FIVE FLAT-BOTTOMED PITS WERE NOTED CONTAINING POTTERY OF THE TWELFTH TO THE THIRTEENTH CENTURY. THERE WAS ALSO A DITCH ALIGNED NORTH-SOUTH WHICH MAY BE A NATURAL FIELD DIVISION OR HOUSE PLOT BOUNDARY DRAINING INTO THE CAR DYKE; ASH IN THE FILL SUGGESTS THAT A HOUSE MAY HAVE BEEN NEARBY. THE POTTERY RECOVERED WAS INTERPRETED AS A DOMESTIC RUBBISH DEPOSIT AND HAS REGIONAL IMPORTANCE BECAUSE IT CONTAINED PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED FABRICS AND THE EARLIEST IDENTIFIED OCCURRENCE OF BOURNE WARE. THE BASES OF SOME PITS REACHED A LAYER OF FINE GRAVEL AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME OF THE PITS MAY HAVE BEEN DUG FOR GRAVEL TO USE AS ROAD METALLING MATERIAL. {1}{2}
