Full Description

Significant scatters of Roman pottery and construction material have been noted in this area to the east of Irnham. The finds include clay and stone tesserae, tile and pieces of mosaic in different colours, and large quantities of pottery sherds including grey ware, calcit-gritted ware, colour-coated ware with rouletting and barbatine decoration, and mortaria. The finds would suggest that there is a probable Roman settlement at this location, possibly a farmstead or perhaps even a villa. {1} Further significant quantities of Roman building material and pottery have been noted in this area, during a site visit conducted in September 2025. The assemblage included substantial pieces of Roman roof tile and combed/incised box flue tile, and large numbers of white stone and red ceramic tesserae. These finds were densely clustered in the north-western corner of this field, where the contours of the land fall away towards Irnham, although the spread of material seemed to continue for some distance beyond this area as well. The concentration and types of material found would again suggest that this may be the site of a former villa. {2}
