Full Description

During a watching brief on land at Bedehouse Bank a ditch eight metres wide and one and a half metres deep with the lower parts waterlogged was found. The ditch had been back filled in the late medieval or early post medieval period. It is suggested (given the proposed alignment of the original Car Dyke) that this ditch may be related to the Car Dyke perhaps acting as an overflow channel draining into the Bourne Eau. {1}{2} A watching brief at TF 1038 1974 revealed the north-western edge of a south-west to north-east orientated ditch. Although there was no secure dating evidence, it is possible that this is an earlier course of the Car Dyke. {3}{4} A watching brief at Bedehouse Bank (TF 1040 1978) revealed the top deposit of a ditch approximately 6 to 7 metres wide and the top deposit was dated to the post medieval period. It was not excavated, but is suggested that it could be an earlier course of the Car Dyke. {5}{6}
