Full Description
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS SO FAR ON THE SITE OF WELLAND BANK PIT HAVE REVEALED FEATURES INCLUDING PITS, POST-HOLES, GULLIES, FIELD BOUNDARIES, TRACKWAY AND POSSIBLE ROUND HOUSES. TWO LARGE DITCHES ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE AREA MAY DEFINE THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF A SETTLEMENT ENCLOSURE. THESE ARE PROBABLY CONTEMPORARY WITH THE DITCHES WHICH CONTAINED LATE BRONZE AGE/EARLY IRON AGE POTTERY. {1}{2}{3}{4}
AN EXTENSION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS REVEALED THAT THERE IS FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR TIMBER STRUCTURES. A PIT WAS REVEALED THAT CONTAINED A WOODEN STAKE OR POST AND OTHER ARTEFACTS. THESE ARE WITHIN AN ENCLOSURE PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED. THE MAIN ENCLOSURE DITCHES BECAME REDUNDANT AND WERE BACKFILLED. SUBSEQUENTLY A GROUP OF PITS WERE CUT, MOSTLY ON THE LINES OF THESE FORMER DITCHES. THESE PITS CONTAINED MANY ARTEFACTS. EVIDENCE FOR SMALL SCALE SALT MAKING WAS ALSO REVEALED. FURTHER FEATURES WERE ALSO REVEALED, INCLUDING PITS (ONE CONTAINING PART OF A POSSIBLE BOAT), AND OTHER STRUCTURAL EVIDENCE. {5}
A FURTHER EVALUATION REVEALED MORE OF THE SETTLEMENT PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED TO THE WEST. {8}
