Full Description
PRN 34856
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS SO FAR ON THE SITE OF WELLAND BANK PIT HAVE REVEALED FEATURES INCLUDING PITS, POST-HOLES, GULLIES, FIELD BOUNDARIES, TRACKWAY AND POSSIBLE ROUND HOUSES. TWO LARGE DITCHES ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE AREA MAY DEFINE THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF A SETTLEMENT ENCLOSURE. THESE ARE PROBABLY CONTEMPORARY WITH THE DITCHES WHICH CONTAINED LATE BRONZE AGE/EARLY IRON AGE POTTERY. {1}{2}{3}{4}
AN EXTENSION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS REVEALED THAT THERE IS FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR TIMBER STRUCTURES. THERE WAS A PIT WHICH CONTAINED A WOODEN STAKE OR POST AND OTHER ARTEFACTS. THESE ARE IN AN EARLY BRONZE AGE ENCLOSURE DITCH PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED. THE MAIN ENCLOSURE DITCHES BECAME REDUNDANT AND WERE BACKFILLED. SUBSEQUENTLY, A GROUP OF PITS WERE CUT, MOSTLY ON THE LINES OF THESE FORMER DITCHES. THESE PITS CONTAINED MANY ARTEFACTS. EVIDENCE FOR SALTMAKING WAS ALSO REVEALED, AS WELL AS A FURTHER PITS (ONE CONTAINING PART OF A POSSIBLE BOAT), AND OTHER STRUCTURAL EVIDENCE. CART RUTS HAVE ALSO BEEN IDENTIFIED. {5}{7}
A FURTHER EVALUATION REVEALED MORE OF THE SETTLEMENT PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED TO THE WEST. {8}
There is an aerial photograph showing part of the work in progress. {10}
