Full Description

34703 The settlement of Manthorpe is first documented in the Domesday Book, when landholdings belonging to St Peter de Burg and Gilbert de Gand are recorded. Manthorpe is returned with other places in the vicinity. {1} The name 'Manthorpe' is derived from an Old Danish personal name 'Manni' and 'thorp', and means 'Manni's secondary settlement'. {2} POSSIBLE EARTHWORKS OF SHRUNKEN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE OF MANTHORPE SEEN ON AP'S RECORDED BY SOUTH KESTEVEN COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGIST SK 77-03. {3} Earthworks are also visible on aerial photographs. Ridge and furrow formerly recorded in 34240 is now incorporated into this record. Ridge and furrow to the south of Manthorpe appears to survive as slight earthworks, which shows on aerial photographs of c.2000. {4}{5}{6}
