Full Description
During a site visit to the woods an intermittant trace of a bank was identified all round the edge of the woods, this is particularly evident on the north and west side. Other boundaries are marked by ditches. Aligned slightly east of north and connecting the Elsthorpe to Morton Road with Hangmans lane is a straight track cut into the ground , this could possibly be part of the Duke of Ancasters railway from Little Bytham to Edenham. In 1861 a stretch of railway was proposed to run through Spring wood. {1}
An area of woodland (all of which is classified as plantation) included in the Nature Conservancy Council's 'Inventory of Ancient Woodland'. Ancient woodland status considered to be probable. {2}
