Full Description

Two Roman swords, 2 daggers and the iron frame of the tablet of a vexillum found in the river Welland at Deeping in about 1740. {1}{2} Two Roman swords, two daggers and the iron frame of a tablet of a vexillum were found in the Welland in 1740, at Deeping in the gravel at Deeping Fen, at the 'Great deping bank, near Waldram Hall.' A fibula with ring attached came from the same parts. The finds were probably made while digging gravel to repair the Welland Bank. {3}{4} The source of this information is Stukeley and as ‘Roman’ in the eighteenth century was often the default period to which antiquities were assigned there is a slight possibility that these finds are Bronze Age. {5}
