Full Description

Dated 1850-51, grey stone cottages. {1} Almshouses founded by Sir Edmund Turnor in 1677, to house six poor people who in 1905 each received 1/- weekly and coals. Rebuilt in 1850-51. The 1881 census give a Mary Mugridge, aged 52, as a resident. She was deaf from birth and was a dressmaker. Still in use as an almshouse. {2} Five almshouses originally built in about 1677, and founded by Edmund Turnor. They were remodelled in about 1851, possibly by William Burn for Sir Christopher Turnor. They are built of squared limestone rubble with slate roofs having raised stone coped gables with ball finials. Above the coped gable of the doorway is a sunk panel with shield and inscription recording the original foundation in 1677.
