Full Description

FOUR ALMOST COMPLETE COFFIN LIDS, ONE WITH CARVED DECORATION FOUND INCORPORATED IN CAREBY RIVER BRIDGE PARAPET. APPEARS THEY WERE INCORPORATED IN THE 1920s BY KETTLE'S BUILDERS FROM THE DEMOLISHED CHURCH AT AUNBY. {1} PROBABLY MADE OF LINCOLNSHIRE LIMESTONE (BARNACK). CARVED LID HAD SINGLE ROLL MOULDING DOWN ONE EDGE AND THE EDGE OF A DOUBLE OMEGA FORM OF CURLING ORNAMENT. SUGGESTS DATE NEARER 12TH CENTURY. {1} WHITE'S DIRECTORY FOR LINCS 1882 LIKELY REFERS TO THESE LIDS AS ' IN THE YEAR 1857 EXCAVATIONS WERE MADE IN THE STACK-YARD AND HOME CLOSE OF ONE OF THE FARMS OF AUNBY DMV ..... SEVERAL STONE COFFINS WERE FOUND, EACH CONTAINING SKELETONS IN A VERY PERFECT STATE'. {1}{2}{3} FROM 1990 THE COFFINS HAVE BEEN LOCATED AT THE EAST END OF CAREBY CHURCH.
