Full Description
Several mounds, thought to represent the remains of a Bronze Age barrow cemetery, have been identified in the area around Three Queens farm. The farm bearing the name 'Three Queens' has now gone, but the name may be a reference to the mounds. One of the mounds was excavated by Rev. Wood during the Second World War, and was found to contain the skeleton of a woman buried beneath 2 coping stones, each about 3ft square and leaning against each other. A flint scraper was recovered with the burial.
Sherds of Bronze Age pottery were recovered in 1976, from the hole left by the roots of a blown-over tree that had grown on one of the mounds. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}
A mound and a ring ditch were identified to the east of the former farm, on aerial photographs analysed by the National Mapping Programme. There are also two ring ditches just across the county boundary in Leicestershire that are part of a presumed barrow cemetery here. There is also, on the Leicestershire side of the border, a pit alignment and parallel linear feature running east to west towards the Three Queens copse and visible up to the edge of the copse where they disappear. These features are likely to continue into Lincolnshire. {10}{11}{12}
