Full Description
Mentioned in Domesday Book as a possession of Earl Morcar, claimed by Baron Drew de Beuere. There was formerly a church here (see PRN 30075 and 33938). The ordnance survey map of 1824 shows a hamlet of about 15 buildings, but no church symbol. Aerial photographs show indeterminate marks in the area.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
No surface indications in the area of extensive parkland.{1}
Members of Stoke Rochford College Archaeological Society walked over the ploughed site. and a quantity of pottery and other artefacts were found. The possible site of the church and the rectory next to it was discovered. A sewage trench across the village site revealed that most of the buildings had 17th or 18th century brick walls erected on corner stones of limestone. The barns had tiled roofs while the houses had slate. The roads were unmetalled and seemed to have been repaired with yellow and grey clay taken from the floodplain of the local stream, the Wyville. Some green glazed sherds were recovered from some of the house sites, while the bulk of the pottery consisted of salt-glazed stonewares, porcelain, lead glazed bowls etc. There were also clay pipes including one of George III date.{6}{7}
After the outline of probable walls were noted near Stoke Rochford Hall, an excavation was undertaken in 1969 which confirmed the presence of a series of walls which were probably medieval in date.{8}
