Full Description

PRN 33932 Garthorpe is first documented in the Domesday Book, and probably has its origins in the Anglo-Saxon period. At that time it was known as Germuntorp, which derives from Old Danish meaning ‘Gerulf’s secondary settlement’. Countess Judith owned a manor there, with a minimum population of about 11. Three mills are also mentioned. {2}{8} Garthorpe appears not to be documented later than the thirteenth century. {9} It is located in the north eastern corner of Stoke Rochford park, and probably extends south towards the Cringle Brook. {1} Pottery dating from the tenth century was recovered during a watching brief at SK 9248 2890, which may relate to activity on the periphery of Garnthorpe deserted cettlement. {6}{7}
