Full Description
A small, single storey stone cottage with 19th century windows and doors. The end wall contains a built up 12th century arch, the only apparent trace of the buildings original purpose. According to White, the building was formerly a chapel of ease, and still retains a Gothic window and a Norman arch. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The plain blocked arch is at the east end of the cottage. In the attic the other side of the arch carries chevron ornaments. No Gothic window was seen. The cottage is locally believed to have been the manor chapel. {5}
Formally a chapel of ease, and now a small single storey cottage with a garret, built out of the nave of the chapel. It has 12th century stonework but with many later 18th, 19th and 20th century alterations. It is built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and has a pantile roof. In one of the gable ends is a blocked 12th century arch with plain imposts, which was the chancel arch of the original chapel. At first floor level, the chancel arch is exposed with a double order of chevron moulding and a chamfered hood mould. The imposts have incised cross carving. This is said to have been the chapel where Isaac Newton worshipped.
