The Ordnance Survey recorded this area as the site of a former Priory, quoting Tanner as providing evidence for this location. This interpretation may be in error, however, and possibly reflects a misreading of the source. The only passage that mentions Colsterworth refers to a grant of land dated 1437/38, in which possessions of Beckford Priory were given to Eton College. The relevant passage refers only to the lands of the Priory in Beckford, Gloucestershire and in Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, rather than any buildings, and appears to have been misread as evidence for the existence of a priory in Colsterworth. {1}{2}{3}{4} In 1965 the published site was under pasture and there were no surface indications of buildings. {5} Earthwork remains of former enclosures, and possible fishponds and buildings have been identified on aerial photographs of this area, examined as part of the National Mapping Programme.
