Full Description

IN THE EARLY PART OF MARCH LAST, IN FORMING A ROAD IN THE PARISH OF STAINBY (HERETOFORE THE OLD POST ROAD BETWEEN POSTWITHAM AND GRANTHAM TO THE NORTH), THE REMAINS OF A ROMAN VILLA WERE DISCOVERED, SITUATED ON A DECLIVITY TO THE SOUTH EAST OF THE RIVER WITHAM AND ABOUT ONE MILE WEST OF THE ROMAN ROAD TO LINCOLN. MANY LOADS OF GOOD SHAPED STONES HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM THE WALLS UNDERGROUND. A MOSAIC PAVEMENT OF RATHER RUDE DESIGN HAS BEEN DISCOVERED, ALONG WITH A BATH. {2} THE STAINBY VILLA WAS DISCOVERED IN 1815 BY LABOURERS GETTING STONE TO REPAIR THE POST ROAD...THE REMAINS OF A PASSAGE PAVED WITH TESSERAE. {3} THERE ARE NO SURFACE TRACES OF THIS VILLA AND NO LOCAL KNOWLEDGE. {1}
