Monument record MLI33875 - EARTHWORK ENCLOSURE, BURTON COGGLES

Summary

EARTHWORK ENCLOSURE, BURTON COGGLES

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

A large rectangular enclosure east of the church looks like a homestead moat. {2}. Aerial photographs show the north and east and possibly part of the west sides of the enclosure. There are additional banks to the south-west suggesting a more extensive feature.{1}{2}{3} There is a large irregular defensive earthwork enclosing approximately 5 acres. The work comprises a ditch with two, probably original, entrances remaining. The feature, in size, situation and construction is comparable to medieval refuges encountered elsewhere in the county which have been dated not earlier than the 12th century.{1}
