Full Description

A few sherds of Roman greyware pottery were found in this location c.1964. They were donated to Lincoln Museum. {1}{2} This site is a depression measuring about 100m by 30m, and is approximately 3m or 4m in depth at its deepest (central) point. It has obviously been subjected to large modification by agricultural machinery over the past hundred years. This site is not an old dried-up spring as the depression has no outlet whatsoever, it is at the high point on a hill and the soil is so rocky (ironstone) that it would not have yielded up water. Around its eastern rim there was a scatter of Romano-British pottery - some greyware, a couple of sherds of Caistorware and other wares. No pottery turned up in the depression itself. The centre of the depression appears to show signs of yellow clay at its deepest point. It may be the site of an ironstone quarry. {3}
