Full Description
THERE IS A LITTLE ANGLO-SAXON INTERLACE CARVING IN THE OUTER CHANCEL WALL, ALSO OTHER ANGLO-SAXON FRAGMENTS. {1}
TWO C10 OR C11 FRAGMENTS, PROBABLY OF A CROSS SHAFT, WITH INTERLACE DECORATION; ONE IN THE EAST WALL, ONE IN THE NORTH. {2}
INCORPORATED IN THE FABRIC OF THE CHURCH ARE TWO INTERLACE PANELS ON WHITE LIMESTONE OF ANCASTER TYPE WHICH APPEAR TO BE PART OF A STANDING CROSS. IT IS PROBABLE THAT THE REMAINDER OF THE CROSS WAS RE-USED IN THE VICTORIAN RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH, BUT WAS ALREADY IN FRAGMENTS BY THE 19th CENTURY. THE MORE OBVIOUS PANEL IS IN THE EAST WALL OF THE CHANCEL, PLACED SOUTH OF THE EAST WINDOW. THIS IS PROBABLY FROM THE BASE OF THE CROSS AND IS A SELF- CONTAINED SINGLE GROOVED INTERLACE WITH TWO LOOSE ENDS AND A DEEPLY CUT BACKGROUND. THE OTHER MORE WEATHERED PANEL IS IN THE NORTH NAVE WALL FORMING THE WEST QUOIN CLOSE TO THE GROUND. THE EXACT PATTERN OF THE DOUBLE GROOVED INTERLACE IS NOT CLEAR BUT THE GENERAL FORM IS OBVIOUS. THE CLOSEST PARALLELS ARE TO BE SEEN AT CREETON AND BURTON PEDWARDINE. {3}~
