ROMAN REMAINS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE QUARRY PIT BETWEEN MILL LANE AND THE RAILWAY W OF SOUTH WITHAM. {4}
IN 1920 AND 1922 A TOTAL OF 24 BURIALS (ONE A CREMATION) HAVE BEEN FOUND WITH SOME ASSOCIATED POTTERY. ALSO FOUND WAS A WELL, OVER 30FT DEEP NEAR WHICH A COIN OF CLAUDIUS GOTHICUS WAS PICKED UP. CLOSE TO THE WELL WAS THE FOUNDATION OF A BULDING 9FT SQUARE WITH SLEEPER WALLS 18 INCHES APART. A BRONZE ORNAMENT AND A DRINKING CUP WERE ALSO FOUND. ROMAN SHERDS OF GREY WARE FROM SOUTH WITHAM WERE SEEN AT LEICESTER MUSEUM IN 1962. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
