Full Description
SOUTHORPE IS SHOWN ON ANCIENT MAPS 1.5 MILES TO 2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF IRNHAM AND RATHER LESS SOUTHWEST OF BULBY, IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE PARISH OF EDENHAM. THE VILLAGE IS MENTIONED FROM THE TIME OF THE DOMESDAY SURVEY ONWARDS. THERE WAS A CHANTRY CHAPEL HERE IN THE C12. A PRIEST WAS LAST INSTITUTED AT SOUTHORPE IN 1521, AND, BY 1563, ONE FAMILY ONLY REMAINED. {1}{2}{3} THE PUBLISHED NAME IS IN AN AREA WHICH IS UNDER CROP. NO SURFACE EVIDENCE OF OCCUPATION WAS NOTED AND THE SITE OF THE CHAPEL WAS NOT DETERMINED. {1}
