Full Description

The base and part of the shaft of an ancient cross stands in the park just outside the village of Witham on the Hill. It was moved here 'many years ago' from Lound, TF0618. ('stone' is published at TF04821653; any connection?) {1}{2} The published stone is no longer extant. Replies to enquiries at the hall, now a school, suggest it probably was the cross remains referred to, but nothing was known of its removal. {1} A site visit was undertaken at Witham Hall Preparatory School (PRN 36830). The site of the cross is marked by a mound (PRN 36831), lying southwest of the school and within landscape gardens of the original Hall. According to local tradition, the mound was thought to be a viewing platform for the ladies of the hall. The mound and a cross is shown on the Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1905. In addition, a village publication concluded that the mound was the remains of a post-mill mound. The mound is quite substantial, well preserved (apart from four substantial trees) and under pasture.{3}
