Full Description

Roman tesserae, roof shingles, & skeleton, iron and glass objects. Found 1931 at a depth of 6-18 ins. Small coin of the House of Constantine on the surface (one iron object was an anvil). Found on Castle Hill Farm. Finds in Grantham Museum.{1}{4} A Roman building was discovered during deep ploughing in a field called The Poodles, Castle Bytham. A pavement of red and yellow tesserae, flue and roof tiles and shingles, a fragment of coloured wall plaster, and a small amount of Roman pottery was found. The site is on high ground near a stream that is a tributary of the River Glen. The original finds made in about 1980. They comprised those listed above, also patches of iron slag and four illegible Roman coins, retained by finder. He indicated siting at SK99251828.
