THE SMALL BLOCKED DOORWAY ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE SOUTH PORCH OF ST. MARTIN'S CHURCH, BARHOLM, IS SAXON. THA AISLE ARCADE IS NORMAN, AND THE REST OF THE CHURCH IS CHIEFLY EARLY
ENGLISH, MUCH RESTORED IN 1857. THE TOWER WAS REBUILT IN 1648. IN NORMAL USE. {1} THE SMALL BLOCKED SOUTH DOORWAY EAST OF THE PORCH IS C11. ROLL-MOULDING, WHICHBELOW THE IMPOSTS FADES INTO THE SQUARE ANGLE OF THE JAMB. THE SOFFIT FACES OF THE IMPOSTS ARE ELABORATELY DECORATED WITH INTERLACE, A CHEQUER PATTERN OF RECTANGLES ALTERNATELY RAISED AND SUNK, A FORM OF ZIGZAG, AND A KIND OF PALMETTE ORNAMENT (cf COLEBY, GLENTWORTH, STOW). ABOVE THE DOORWAY THE REMAINS OF A ROOD, NO DOUBT PAINTED. NORMAN THE RESPONDS OF THE CHANCEL ARCH. THIS ARCH IS PERHAPS WIDENED, AND THE ARCH ITSELF WAS CERTAINLY MADE POINTED LATER. THE SCALLOP CAPITALS AND OTHER DETAILS STILL HEAVY. THEN THE NORTH ARCADE, ALSO NORMAN, BUT PROBABLY A LITTLE LATER. THREE BAYS, ROUND PIERS, MANY-SCALLOPED CAPITALS, SQUARE ABACI. ARCHES WITH A BIG HALF- ROLL AND SMALLER MOULDINGS, ALSO ZIGZAG AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE WALL. HOODMOULD WITH TWO ROWS OF LOBES OR SCALLOPS. TWO PIECES OF SUCH A HOODMOULD ARE RE-USED OVER A TOWER WINDOW. THE TOWER ARCH USES THE SAME MOTIFS, BUT APPEARS ALL VICTORIAN. THE SOUTH DOORWAY SEEMS TO BELONG TO THE NORTH ARCADE. TWO ORDERS OF COLONNETTES, SCALLOPED CAPITALS, TYMPANUM WITH INCISED BANDS OF ZIGZAG, ARCH WITH ZIGZAG, ALSO AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE WALL. SMALL, PLAIN NORTH DOORWAY, PROBABLY OF THE SAME TIME. LATE C13 CHANCEL, SEE THE SEDILIA AND PISCINA AND THE SOUTH WINDOW WITH LATE GEOMETRICAL TRACERY (POINTED- TREFOILED LIGHTS, A QUATREFOIL ABOVE) AND THE EAST WINDOW WITH INTERSECTING TRACERY. BUT THE CHANCEL WAS HEAVILY RESTORED BY EDWARD BROWNING IN 1855. THE NAVE SOUTH SIDE HAS A WINDOW OF THREE STEPPED LANCET LIGHTS WHICH GOES WITH THE DATE OF THE EAST WINDOW. THE WEST TOWER REBUILT IN 1648 AND HEIGHTENED BY BROWNING IN 1855. BELOW THE DATE 1648 THE MOVING AND TELLING INSCRIPTION: 'WAS EVER SUCH A THING SINCE THE CREATION. A NEW STEEPLE BUILT IN THE TIME OF VEXATION.' THE FONT IS HEPTAGONAL AND NORMAN, WITH THE ODDEST JUMBLE OF UNCONNECTED, ISOLATED MOTIFS: A SHORT LENGTH OF DOGTOOTH, ROWS OF SMALL CIRCLES, FIVE- PETALLED FLOWERS, A SPIRAL, ETC. A MONUMENT TO RICHARD WALBURGE (DIED 1715) BY WILLIAM PALMER HAS AN IONIC AEDICULE WITH A RELIEF OF SKULLS. {2}~
