Full Description

The Priory of Newstead by Stamford was originally founded as a hospital towards the end of the 12th century and became a house of Augustinian canons either in or before 1226. {1} Newstead priory was situated on the River Gwash about half way between Stamford and Uffington, and near to the present water mill. {2} There are no surface traces of this establishment in the vicinity of Newstead Mill (TF 046 078). {3}{4} The hospital of St Mary at Newstead by Stamford was founded by William d’Albini in the early 13th century probably in about 1225, perhaps adapting a pre-existing bridge chapel. The hospital made an easy and uneventful transition into a Priory in about 1247. The priory was dissolved in 1536. {5}
