On the 15th of August 1807, men digging on Deeping Common discovered a human skeleton, about 16" below the surface. Near it was an earthen pot containing 782 Roman coins, including some of Augustus, Tiberius, and the first Claudius. A few of the coins which Mr. Smith has presented to Messrs. Newcomb and Son, the printers of the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Journal, are those of Augustus, Tiberius and the first Claudius (27 BC - 54 AD); but the irregularity of the coins towards the exergue makes it difficult to determine.
