Full Description

On the 15th of August 1807, men digging on Deeping Common discovered a human skeleton, about 16" below the surface. Near it was an earthen pot containing 782 Roman coins, including some of Augustus, Tiberius, and the first Claudius. The exact findspot is unknown. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} 'Some persons who were lately engaged in digging on Deeping Common, discovered a perfect human skeleton about 16" below the surface, and near it an earthen pot containing 782 Roman cions, of which the greatest part are now in the possession of Mr. Henry Smith of Deeping St James. A few of the coins which Mr. Smith has presented to Messrs. Newcomb and Son, the printers of the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Journal, are those of Augustus, Tiberius and the first Claudius (27 BC - 54 AD); but the irregularity of the coins towards the exergue makes it difficult to determine. Around the head of one of the plainest, is the following inscription: IMP.C.VICTORINUS P AUG.' {7}
