During rescue excavations in 1973, a 16th century potter's croft was revealed, fronting onto both Cherryholt Lane and Eastgate. The excavations revealed both domestic and craft workshop structures, including a house, storesheds, workshops, waster heaps, a cobbled yard, a boundary ditch, a kiln and a puddling pit. The kiln was circular in plan and had three flues. A large assemblage of pottery was collected, much of it waster material. The pottery from the site has been identified as Bourne D-ware with cooking pots, jugs, pancheons, pipkins, jars, dishes, chaffing dishes, water bottles, lids and watering pots. Beneath the post-medieval layers was evidence of much earlier potting activity - including traces of an earlier, Medieval kiln (PRN 33237). Pottery production appears to have ceased by the late 17th to early 18th century.{1}{2}
