Full Description

PRN 33237 Incorporates records PRN 33245 and PRN 33236 (now deleted) In a field east of Cherry Holt, Bourne, is reputed to have been a pottery kiln of possible medieval date.{1}{2} A large quantity of medieval pottery found in the foundations for new electricity sub-station (and the bungalow immediately to the north) on the west side of Cherry Holt Land, Bourne.{3}{4} During rescue excavations in 1973, two medieval pottery kilns were examined. The two kilns were both similar in plan, being approximately circular and having four triangular pedestals with four stoke pits. Due to the nature of the works only one of the kilns could be excavated. Large quantities of wasters associated with the excavated kiln were identified as Bourne A-ware dating to the 14th century.{5}{6}{7}{8}{9} Archaeolgoical evaluation was undertaken at Cherry Holt Road. Substantial evidence for the Bourne medieval potteries was identified. Three trenches, located across the central area of the site, exposed clay extraction pits backfilled with medieval pottery (much of it waster or mis-fired material) suggesting a close association with the medieval kilns excavated immediately to the south during the 1970s. All the trenches contained features believed to relate to the 14th century pottery industry.{10}{11}
