Full Description

PRN 33153 Ditched enclosures of Roman sites along a watercourse, seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs at Line Dike. The site was visited in February 1951. At TF14642494: a general sparse sherd scatter over a well ploughed silty area. At TF14622509: a deep furrow turned up concentration of sherds on the level linking with another site to the north. At TF14572500: domestic and industrial material including burnt daub from a wall and the foundations of a hut. This evidence came from a 19 foot band of sandy silt along the north and east sides of a rectangle 70 feet east-west by 40 feet north-south. A burnt zone of very dark soil, rich in powdered and lumped baked clay and evaporating vessel fragments ran 3 feet wide along one third of the north arm and 10 feet wide down the eastern arm of the L-shaped layer of silt, a wide area of dark soil with occupation debris stretched another 20 feet eastwards.{1}{2}{3} Pottery second century and possibly third century. A and C sites included early 2nd century Samian.{1}
