Full Description
The Gilbertine priory of St Saviour was founded by Godwin a rich citizen of Lincoln in or before 1199. It never had more than two or three canons and a few lay brothers, part of whose duties it was to repair Holland Bridge, or Bridge End Causeway. The church and buildings burnt down in 1445 and some time after this the priory became a cell of Sempringham Priory with which it was surrendered in 1538. Stone from the priory was used to build Priory Farm, which lies 50m to the north. Some faint traces of soil disturbance are visible on aerial photographs at TF 144 361 and may be associated with medieval occupation. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
No surface remains of the priory are visible and the area is under crop. The priory farm is 17th century and is of brick and stone construction, the majority of the stones have been refaced but two show decoration. {1}
Some amorphous and shallow earthworks are visible around Priory Farm on the Environment Agency LiDAR data. These may possibly relate to the priory. {9}
