Full Description
Excavation on site started 3.5.1972. Site at rear of Grammar School bounded by East St & Elm St. Kiln & attached shop of Geo Longstaff, taken over existing kiln from Rob Middleton about 1845. Kiln built into shop itself Fired from interior of ground floor , possibly loaded from second storey., In 1873 Longstaff submitted plans for alterations to kiln to fire from rear of premises. Discussion of structure etc.{1} '3 have been noted, Rob Middleton mentioned in 1832 pollbook & continued until at least 1842 in North St. Geo Longstaff is first referred to 1849 as in North St continued there until at least 1861. By 1876 & for at least 6 years his wife Mary carried on trade at 16 Elm St... {2}
