Full Description
PRN 30724
A sewerage trench to the front of Priory Farm uncovered a limekiln built of dressed limestone blocks and masonry robbed from the Priory. It was circular with an inside diameter of 9 feet. It stood on square base from which two arched wind tunnels extended, terminating in a single opening. The height of the square base was about 4 feet 6 inches. Thickness of kiln wall was about 2 feet and it was badly burnt and split. There was a reused tombstone in the wind tunnel. There were no debris to date the kiln but from documentary evidence it was determined that it was possibly late 18th to early 19th century and it belonged to the Eldred family. {1}
