Full Description

Some sherds of Stamford ware including a strap handle as well as some Lyveden ware and a packhorse bell. {1} There is a sketch of the bell in the parish file. {2} Situated between Stamford and Tinwell, in some deeds Breadcroft is treated as part of the town. The name supposed to be derived from being extensively occupied by bakers. In 1304 the Abbot of Peterborough had 100 shillings rent for the public oven there. Domesday Book refers to 70 houses held by Queen Edith (under the Stamford entry) and this may refer to the village. In 1332 there were only 6 taxpayers in Breadcroft. Breadcroft as a placename remained in the 19th century.{3}
