Full Description

PRN 30671 A pottery kiln with an approximate date range of 800-900 AD was discovered during excavations at the castle site. It produced coarse Stamford ware and was a single-flued up-draught structure of many phases. A series of waster heaps and a puddling pit were associated with it. The products of this kiln are mostly similar to those from other excavated Stamford kilns and include cooking pots, bowls and a small number of other vessels such as pitchers, although there are some differences of detail. Some more unusual sherds, representative of six storage vessels, were also found. These have red painted decoration similar to that seen on some continental vessels from Beauvais or Pingsdorff, although they are made of standard Stamford ware fabric and one has a typical Stamford ware internal glaze. This group of unusual vessels appear to have been made at the kiln rather than being imports. {1}
