Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

Part of an enclosure with a U-shaped ditch, an internal palisade and an external concentric palisade was found during excavations at the castle site. A coin of Alfred the Great was found in the upper fill and early Stamford ware within. The function of the enclosure is at present uncertain. It is too slight to be part of the Danish Burgh defences and probably too large to have been an ordinary property bounday. It may possibly have been a late 10th century ring-work or a set of semi-defensive ditches around a substantial residence. {1}
