Full Description

PRN 30663 By the end of the 9th century the whole of East England came under Danish domination and within it permanent military strongholds were set up. These were known as the 5 boroughs. One was Stamford. Edward set up a separate burgh on the south side of the river so it is assumed that the Danish Borough lay under the present town. {1} Excavations in George St revealed N-S arrangement of timbers similar to palisade at Tamworth. Associated with possible turf rampart, but no evidence of ditch due to later quarrying. {2}
