Full Description
Suggested that the house of Austin Canons was established prior to 1189, that this was later converted into hospital for pilgrims. Stephen is reputed to have granted demesne land to hospital of that name. Site uncertain, gradually assumed that hermitage site was it, but no real reason to believe this. {1}
The hospital may have been located opposite St Martin's Church, High Street St Martin's, and the building may have still stood until as late as 1818. {2}
