PRN 30627 (PRN 34026 was emalgamated into this record on 09/06/09 as PRN 34026 was changed to be Truesdale's Hospital) These almshouses were founded in 1604 by Rich Snowden . The current building bears an inscription recording that is was rebuilt in 1823.{1}{2} The present building is a single storey Tudor Gothic structure, built 1822-3 by Thomas Pierce, architect and Robert Goodwin, mason. The red brick chimneystacks were added in 1877. {3} The almshouses were founded by Richard Snowden, Minister of the church of St John, in 1604. They were demolished and rebuilt in 1822 to house eight poor aged widows, who in 1905 received 6/- weekly as well as other distributions half yearly. They ar single storey in a Tudor Gothic style with bed sitting rooms. Red brick chimneystacks were added in 1877. They are not presently used as almshouses after advertisements for new residents failed to bring in applications. {5} Snowden's Hospital or St John's Callis was established in around 1604. Richard Snowden was the benefactory of the building in his will.
