Hospital of St John the Baptist and Thomas Martyr stood at the Northants end of Stamford Br.Founded c1189. Stood on site of present Burghley Hosp. Traces of C12 foundations comprising part of a watergate arch, buttress and walling remain on the river side, {1}{2}{3}{4}
Founded 1173-80. Stood on S side and part of the bridge. Actual site may have moved. Discussion of history and possible siting. {5}
DURING AN EVALUATION AT STATION ROAD (TF 0296 0686), A MEDIEVAL DITCH WAS RECORDED, WHICH MAY REPRESENT A BOUNDARY DITCH ENCLOSING LAND BELONGING TO THE HOSPITAL. THIS DITCH WAS ALLOWED TO SILT UP NATURALLY. MEDIEVAL DUMPED SOIL LAYERS WERE ALSO SEEN. {6}
