Full Description

The friary was founded in 1343 in the west suburb of Stamford, outside St Peters Gate, on land formerly occupied by the Friars of the Sack. The friary surrendered in 1538. The site is indicated by the broken ground in front of Rutland Terrace, and fragments of the early church were uncovered in the early 18th century.{1}{2}{3}{4}{7} The site of the friary was granted in 1341. There was an oratory and dwelling space for 12 friars. Part of church was built at least by 1345 when the founder of the friary was buried in the choir. Excavations in 1712 revealed part of the plan. Despite some inconsistencies the buildings seem to be in the form of a square with a central courtyard. The whole comprised a large enclosure about half a mile in circumference.{5} There are considerable earthworks covering most of one field, reaching heights of up to 2m the field does not appear to have been ploughed at any time and there may be building foundations beneath the earthworks.{6} The house of the Friars of the Sack must have been founded prior to 1274 as the Order was suppressed in that year. There were still 4 friars in residence in 1300. The house was supposed to have come to an end in 1317. {2}{3}
