Summary

White Friars (Carmelites) in Stamford

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

The Carmelites settled in the eastern suburb of Stamford shortly before 1268, when Henry III granted oaks for the building. The house later claimed to be a royal foundation. The friary, which was dissolved in 1538, was said to have been a magnificent structure with grounds nearly a mile in circumference. {1}{2}{6} The only remains are a 14th century gateway. The house is regarded as a royal foundation. In 1268 Henry III granted oaks to build the church. It is outside the east gate and it was necessary to clear houses to build it. There is some confusion as to which site belonged to the white friars and which to the Grey Friars. The suggestion is that the White Friars were immediately outside the walls. The friary is known to have housed a maximum of 35 friars but was still a large foundation. There are no real records of the buildings except the gate and the precinct wall. {3} Building work on the hospital site revealed medieval foundations. {4} See also 30614 (SAM107) for the scheduled gateway to the friary.
