Full Description

Prehistoric to medieval settlement was revealed and destroyed by surface ironworkings at different times since 1882 along a strip of land about 1 mile long and a quarter to a half a mile wide on either side of Sewstern Lane, where it divides Woolsthorpe and Denton. The finds included prehistoric and Roman pottery, ashes, debris, deer antlers and boar tusks, querns, loom weights, slag, clay blocks, perhaps kiln furniture were found. THE FINDS INCLUDE ROMAN. ... IN AND AROUND THIS WALLED SPACE WERE FOUND 2 ACRES OF METALLING AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF AN EXTENSIVE BUILDING ABOUT 6 TO 18 INCHES BELOW THE SURFACE, SOME OF THE STONES WERE FIRED AND HAD ASHES LYING ON THEM AS IF THE PLACE HAD BEEN BURNT. A NUMBER OF FLAT TILES c0.75 INCHES THICK WITH 1 HOLE FOR PEGGING AND THE SIDES RAISED 2 INCHES AND DRAWING IN TO ONE END. ALSO ROMAN POTTERY WAS FOUND. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
