Full Description

THE ANGLO-SAXON CREMATION AND INHUMATION CEMETERY AT SPITALGATE HAS YIELDED MANY URNS, IRON SPEARHEADS, KNIFE BLADES, SHIELD BOSSES, AND BRONZE SQUARE- HEADED FIBULAE. THE CEMETERY IS SITED ON THE EAST OF THE MALTHOUSES, IN THE FORK OF THE GREAT NORTH ROAD AND THE ROAD TO DONINGTON AND BOSTON. THE AREA IS NOW BUILT OVER. {1}{2}{3} THERE ARE NO GRAVE-GOODS AT PRESENT KNOWN FROM THIS SITE TO SUPPORT THE VIEW THAT THIS SITE WAS A CREMATION CEMETERY. PHILLIPS' INFORMANT WAS H PRESTON OF GRANTHAM; HE REPORTED MANY URNS FOUND HERE BUT THIS WAS APPARENTLY AN INACCURATE IMPRESSION PERHAPS CREATED BY CONFUSION WITH REMAINS FOUND ELSEWHERE.
